Lately i've been thinking....
Today, i ran into an old school mate of mine at the Palms.
After running a couple of errands, we were joined by another female friend of hers and we decided to chill at Cafe Verganano. So i'm sipping my milkshake and they are puffing away on their cancer sticks, and we start to conversate.
Lets call my old schoolmate Chi and her friend Lacey.
So Chi starts by complementing her friends hair so of course i had to complement the hair as well.
Chi then goes on to tell me that the weave is a brazzilian weave and she knows a supplier, just in case i'm interested. So i ask how much the one she's wearing cost and she says #85,000. In case you missed that, i can write it in words EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND NAIRA, ZERO KOBO ONLY!
I must give myself credit for not keeling over in shock, i just thought i might have heard wrong i even asked her how much the shorter lenghts cost and she said #60,000. Ok oh. (Baroque shey you were talking about #60,000 shoe yday!)
Make i first swallow spit.
Ok, now my thing is.........Ok, it's not just one thing, it's many things.
First, is it just me or is it extremely VAIN to spend such an exhorbitant amount of money on a weave???
As in, in my mind, i think those weaves are made for the likes of awon weavalicious madams like Beyaonce and Tyra, not for a young girl with no visible means of income! Like serzly, where could she possibly have gotten such money to spend on a weave? Ok, let us not even go there, but what kind of values do you have if you would spend so much on a weave? Again, this is all my opinion, but i just think that such money can be put to much better use than a mere weave which can never turn you into the next Most Beautiful Girl in the UNIVERSE!
If at this age, she spends so much on an ordinary weave, as she gets older one can only imagine the kind of lifestyle she might have to resort to in order to keep up.
To say that i was saddened by this girl would be an understatement, because for me it went beyond just carrying 18 inches of curls on her head. It made me think of the kind of values some of us Nigerians have.
I believe our Nigerian society celebrates all the wrong things and as such people would do go out of theur way to keep up with the Joneses.
I used to think this mentality of extravagant fooloshness would be much reduced in my generation, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case. These days everybody seems to be looking for the shortest cut to big bucks.
It seems like hardly anyone wants to live for more.
Living with us in our society are people who would spend #5,000 as feeding money for a family of 4 in a month, and would pray for you forever if you give them that much, yet people go about living so extravagantly.
Yes, we always complain about tht state of our nation, and how the government is bad and how the government isn't doing enough, but if we as individuals play our own little roles, our country will definitely grow and get much better.
I am by no means trying to paint myself as a saint, infact i am rather vain sef according to some people, but i think there is a line where vanity crosses over to foolishness, and i do manage to stay away from that line.
There really is so much more this matter brought to my mind today, but typing in the dark isn't really cool, so i'll stop here.
Toodles peoples.

even if its Brazilian weave nko, my foot. mschewww
c'mon! does d hair have the price tag on it. the girl crossed d line. if she is my friends, i may be ashamed of her. they so many needy pple that part of that weave money can help
Lol, me sef wanted to do brazilian weave till I heard the price. I kukuma just crawled back to my 19.99 yaky weave I had brought along with me. It seems to be the way it is here in nigeria, as I hear people talk about prada this, gucci this and I hear their salary and wonder what magic these people are doing to afford all this. Ah well, to each their own, if you can afford it, why not?
Madam I feel you.I was in a salon a few months ago and two girls walked in wanting to fix their brazilian weave, I innocently asked how much the peice cost as it was nice. I got the shock of my life when one said it was 60k a piece and she was using two! The hairdresser was charging 15k to attach it!
I was upset as I left the salon. Hair? 135k? Our generation is leaving a terrible legacy.
So sad !!!!!!!!!!!
They do it in London to o , I still just don't get it. You can get a weave just as nice for 1/3 of the price so I really don't know why they bother themselves!!!
They feel somehow saying it's Brazilian hair because I know me too I would be 'feeling' like a 'bigz gerls'.... Naija ppl love glam glam and it shocks me they have the moeny for it knowing that the country lays in such poverty....I'm not saying we work to develop the country but if you can spend money on your hair like that then surely you can help someone out ... well mayb it's unrealistic sha
those brazillian things is just crazy(d price i mean). i dont think there is any justification for making hair that amount in a 3rd world country no matter how well to do you are. Just doesnt make sense (to me)
that's like what? $800? those who do conversion, make una tell us! but Damn, that one pass me oh! seriously. that money fit take care of my hair needs for a year. Brazilian my foot! na stupidity! abeg, does it have gold flecks sewn in too? or what?
Bia are you meaning to telling me that these chics fixed hair for 800 bucks? I have nothing to say ok. Absolutely no words!
wow....at that rate she will soon have nicks and tucks...it starts gradually...
...interesting (as in, i like!) post...i need to gather my thoughts properly to post...i'll be back!...
maybe the girl get aristo(s).
hmmmm...I thought the same EXACT thing!!!! CRAZY!
well...this whole brazilean and indian weave is just the new wave of Lag....
i must admit they are nice..
cheaper ones can be gotten...
anyways i always believe if you can afford it..its your call...what you do with it
WOW, me sef I'm like whoaaa. 85,000 naira ke? Cold just catch me!
brazilian my ass!!!
LOL!!!
I can totally relate to this post girl...
A lady walked into my shop wanting to buy clothes for her son. She found out i don't do kiddies apparel just educational stuffs(books, toys). It took me plenty minuted to convince her to buy a mental stimulation toy that cost N1000 for her kid.
Guess what, before she left she brought out this so called brazilian wig from her bag telling me to buy it for N65,000.
My dear, I asked her that if i paid that amount for a wig, wont she slap some sense into my head?lol!!!
Shebi Brazilian hair is cheap now, try aunt funmi hair at 500pounds a piece or something crazy like that, ive never been able to understand this madness i swear.
Lol...85,000naira? Hmmm na wa o. It's the gbo gbo bigz girl syndrome I guess of which I'm not interesting on jumping on that train.
I mean seriously? Is it really necessary? Well we know for sure that it's not Daddy's money paying for that.
IMO, dats just waaaay too much.
God bless N500 Darling Yaki! Amen!
Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
85grand is the total amount I'd spend on haircuts in a year. If it even gets to three-quarters of that amount!
Are the braids automatically operated and voice-sensitive?
Are they fitted with biometric scanners,eh?
Wow!
That's stupidly expensive! I feel you on that...how in the world did she get the money if she doesn't have any visible means of income???
Seriously we can be VAIN atimes as in major vain...God help our generation(Amen)
Been a while since I stopped by, really need to edit my blog roll.
So you are around to- on your way out though.
Tell me about it- Imagine living in this town and havig to face such people all the time-
makes you wonder if they have their future in mind
As concerned as you all seem to be about this issue, I doubt it's much of a big deal..Nobody tells you how to spend your money and I wonder why you feel you should dictate to others...If they can afford it(apparently they can), its their perogative!!!
For those of you spending N500 on a yaki weave, why not give that money to a hungy child on the streets and use thread to plait your hair??there will always be poorer people around but that doesnt necessarily affect all the choices one makes.
For those of you who dont know, the good thing about aunty funmi weaves and the likes is that besides the ''wow'' factor, they last for years and years and you really need only one...so if that counts as value for money for some people, its their choice to make.
Most of you who r hatin.. would buy exactly the same thing if YOU COULD AFFORD IT!!!!
